Speaker(s): Dr. Pamela Lim (Singapore University of Social Science)
Topic: B.E9 Will you sit with me? Working with parents on helping children/teenagers with real or imaginary fears
Synopsis: Dr. Pamela Lim is born and bred in Singapore and survived the local education system but had her mindset challenged when exposed to education in an Australian and American system, where she did my Masters in Education and my Doctorate in Psychology. She started her career as an educator and eventually switched to counselling and psychology. Having worked with children, youths and adults from all walks of lives for over 20 years, her hope is that today’s youths become the well-adjusted and happy adults, who are contributing citizens of tomorrow. She believes that if given the opportunity and guidance, with acceptance and understanding, individuals with mental health problems can live fulfilling lives.
Join her for this Human Library Experience to hear how she journeyed and "sat with" two children and their families. *Didi is a preschooler who had some bowel movement issues, is an intelligent typical child and yet had an irrational fear of going to the toilet even after his physiological issues were resolved. *Mei Mei was 11 years old when she suddenly thought that she was a pedophile. She was anxious and scared that she was going to hurt the little children around her and begged her parents to kept her locked up. Journey with Dr. Pam, Mei Mei and her family as they learned to use a modified version of Image Rehearsal Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to battle her fears.
